The Diary of Anne Frank

Opera Theatre Company The Diary of Anne Frank

Tuesday 28th September | 8pm | €20/€18

Vivid and insightful, this heart-rending opera re-creates the world of 13 year-old Anne Frank in hiding, living in hope and fear, and longing for normality for herself and her family. Sung in English, the focus is on Anne Frank’s original words – her joy over a glimpse of blue sky, the budding love for her friend Peter, her determination to remain courageous, her humour and her resilient hopes for freedom, all of which find moving and eloquent expression in the poignant score.  Opera Theatre Company’s 24th year of touring opera throughout Ireland continues with this memorable and atmospheric opera. Russian composer Grigory Frid, whose own family suffered enormously under Stalin, was so inspired by Anne Frank’s diary that he created the opera in 1969. With Andrew Synnott conducting Opera Theatre Company’s eight-piece chamber orchestra and with direction by Ingrid Craigie and Annilese Miskimmon, this compelling production marks the company’s first visit to Roscommon Arts Centre and should not be missed.Book Tickets

With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study for a better life. However, this change proves an equally difficult trial with the young woman finding herself in a different culture loaded with abrasive characters and profound disappointments that deeply trouble her. We open with our heroine, Maeve, putting on her new snow white bra, and stepping out into the world as a young woman. She has an obsession with breasts and bras and can't help but stare at other girls and women, even the head nun doesn't escape her gaze. Otherwise, her world revolves around her three friends, Ruth, Claire and Orla, who are more experienced in the ways of the world. They wear bras already (except Claire the feminist) and they've all had boyfriends. The new bra is a start but they really hope Maeve can find a fella, even offering kissing lessons to prepare her. What no one expects, least of all Maeve, is that she should snare the local sixteen-year old heartthrob. Maeve is so smitten with him that she lets her friends down when they need her the most. In trouble with her friends and in school, she gets dumped by the heartthrob when she sneaks into the local dance with him and he leaves with another girl. Her parents find out and she ends up in trouble at home, where she takes on extra domestic duties. She does the laundry and even her bra has lost its former brilliance. Maeve realizes what she has lost. Her friends rally round for her 14th birthday, Maeve returns to the fold a little older and a little wiser. City of War: The Story of John Rabe

Wednesday 17th November | 10am | TY/SENIOR GERMAN

A true-story account of a German businessman who saved more than 200,000 Chinese during the Nanjing massacre in 1937-38. When in 1937 the Japanese Imperial Army invaded China, John Rabe was the Director of the German Industrial Siemens factory in Nanking. Rabe was also a loyal member of the Nazi Party. When the Japanese arrived in Nanking and began exterminating the civilian population, Rabe, together with a few other Westerners who were in the city, formed a Safety Zone – an area within the city which Japanese and Chinese soldiers were not allowed to enter. Though the Safety Zone could handle approximately 100 000 people, more than 200 000 entered it. Outside of the Safety Zone, the Japanese killed approximately 300 000 Chinese soldiers and civilians (between 60 000 – 70 000 women were also raped). Rabe, assisted by a number of foreign diplomats who chose to stay in Nanking after the Japanese arrived, attempted to protest the massacres but could not do much other than welcome as many people as possible in the Safety Zone. He wrote a letter to Adolph Hitler begging him to intervene but did not get a reply. The Story of John Rabe chronicles the notorious Naking Massacre, which to this very day remains a very sensitive issue for Chinese and Japanese chronicles.

The Acorn Man & The Tale of Francis Flute

This year, we are once again offering rural schools in Roscommon, the opportunity to host their very own theatre company in their school hall during Lollipops. Mighty Tales are coming to Roscommon to share two fantastic and spell-binding tales with primary school children the length and breadth of the county. “The Acorn Man” is a folk tale with an ecological theme about the life of a humble shepherd, who forested an entire mountain single-handed. Inspired by the popular tale 'The Man Who Planted Trees', the show is essentially a homage to old people and their value in society.   “The Tale of Francis Flute” is a comic piece, concerning the exploits of a harmless fool who is convinced that he is going to marry a beautiful princess. Despite her irascible father and the machinations of a gang of villainous palace guards, he achieves his aim. . . . well, almost.

Dear Frankie

Five Lamps Theatre Company Dear Frankie

Wednesday 20th October | 8pm | €16/€14

Mention two words: “Dear Frankie” to anyone aged forty or over in this country and something predictable happens. They start to sing the signature tune to Frankie Byrne’s iconic radio show, “The Women’s Page”.  For over twenty years, Frankie ruled supreme on the airwaves on matters amorous.  In an era without internet, without dedicated self-help book sections in the bookshop, where the Librarian knew your Mother so you couldn’t borrow that book, information was pretty hard to come by. Luckily, there was Frankie Byrne. Starring Nuala Hayes, “Dear Frankie” celebrates the eclectic life and times of Frankie Byrne, Ireland’s first radio agony aunt.  The various and authentic problems written to her and heard throughout the play offer a fascinating insight into the hang-ups, concerns and sorrows of Ireland in the 60’s and 70’s.  Book Tickets

Daniel Chesters practice investigates issues that look at contemporary Ireland within the framework of social, political and economic conditions. Paul Mosse | Two and a Half D

Opening Reception Friday 5th November 5.30pm - 7pm Paul Mosse | Two and a Half D

Friday 5th November - Thursday 16th December | during centre opening hours

Paul’s work focuses on space and scale and the tactile world of the senses.  He works on many pieces at once and they sometimes join or divide and the processes involved, usually direct how the final image looks.  A range of non-traditional low-tech craft and materials are used, including sawdust, nails, screws, paper, paint and wood.   Paul uses complicated and senseless systems and processes to push the work into areas he couldn't reach with conscious decision-making and sometimes the end result can be sculpture-proper, but most times it is what the artist terms "2 1/2 D painting".

Paul Mosse was born and now lives in Co. Kilkenny. He studied at The Chelsea College of Arts in London and has exhibited throughout Ireland and Europe.
